TITLE:   Visiting Thandaza - May 2008DATE POSTED:   14 July 2008

Visiting Thandaza is always a little difficult, as there are so many people, so many children crammed into a small space that it is virtually impossible to single him out for special attention. It also just doesn’t really seem fair, as there are literally kids everywhere - all of them very cute, and all of them in need of a little attention.

Thandaza (whose parents passed away from HIV), his brother and older sister live with their aunt. These are not the only children living with her – she has three kids of her own, and Thandaza’s sister has two children, as does the aunt’s boyfriend who also lives there. The 10 (or more of them) all live in a room which is literally 2m x 3m.

I undertook this visit to take the family food and see if they were happy with the mattresses and blankets we had bought for the children. As there is very little space, the kids sleep on the concrete floor in the little spaza shop next door – so it made sense to buy mattresses and some blankets to help them fight off the winter cold.

When we arrived Thandaza was busy washing in a plastic tub behind the door – and unsurprisingly, he was quite sheepish initially at having all these visitors arriving while he wasn’t properly dressed. However, despite his reticence his aunt was extremely grateful for the food. The little shop her boyfriend runs doesn’t making a lot of money because food prices keep rising. So they survive on her grants (a few hundred rand a month) and food parcels.

Even though the space they all have to live in is tiny, it is surprisingly ordered. She showed us where she keeps the mattresses (piled up on the bed during the day) and the blankets. She can’t stop telling us how happy she is about the mattresses and blankets and how she would like to write a letter of thanks.

The reality is harsh – she tells us how Thandaza’s sister, who is just 18, already has two children and no means to supporting them as she has no education. She asks Sheena (my friend who teaches at the local nursery school) to talk to her about sterilization as she doesn’t know how they could possibly support any more children. She is also worried because Thandaza has another older sister who has run away, and no-one knows where she is or what she is up to.

While it is difficult to make a significant difference to their circumstances (as the space is just so small for so many of them) the food that we take to them really does help. We have also said we will try and help the aunt to secure the government’s orphans grant she is entitled to, which is about R700per month (and will make a difference).

I’d also like to take Thandaza and his brother on some outings in the coming months so they get a little bit of special attention and experience life outside their current surroundings.

TITLE:   Gumboots ShowDATE POSTED:   19 May 2004

GUMBOOTS is an electrifying 90 minutes of pure entertainment that you will love! Twelve of South Africa's finest performers explode onto the stage in an exhilarating extravaganza of dance, song and the infectious energy of African rhythm.

Bare chested, sexy and supremely talented these singers, actors, dancers and musicians leave their audiences inspired and in awe by their unique dance routines, boundless energy and sheer physicality. Hand clapping, toe tapping and definitely boot slapping, GUMBOOTS excites, entertains and enthrals in a unique theatrical celebration of life.

With original and contemporary songs and dancing like you've never seen before, GUMBOOTS injects the rich harmonies embodying the spirit of Africa into a dynamic show which captivates the hearts and emotions of every audience.

GUMBOOTS is based on the South African tradition of Gumboot Dancing. In the nineteenth century, South Africa's mine workers were forbidden to speak during the long days underground. Instead, the workers communicated with each other through movement and the rhythmic slapping of their Wellington boots. Over the next hundred years a new language of dance was born.

Upbeat and contemporary, GUMBOOTS is a refreshing new work from an international creative team. Director Zenzi Mbuli and Designer Nigel Triffitt (of Tap Dogs fame) have created a visual and musical feast of sheer delight.

TITLE:   Gumboots UK Launch ReviewDATE POSTED:   March 2004

On the 31st of January 2004 The Gumboots Foundation held their UK Launch at South African House in London. Guests were treated to excellent South African arts and entertainment including dance, music and photography. Central to the launch was the introduction of our projects and the work being done in South Africa - each project was allocated a stand where volunteers were available to answer questions and assist those wanting to get involved.

Hosting our event at such a magnificent venue would not have been possible without the valued support of the SA High Commission, and we were extremely proud to have Mr Sisa Ncwana in attendance on the night. We'd also like to thank all our sponsors (link to sponsor page on website) and our guests for making the evening such a great success, and look forward to harnessing the energies and building relationships with donors old and new.

TITLE:   Gumboots Foundation Christmas Celebration - Johannesburg, November 2003DATE POSTED:   January 2004

The Gumboots Foundation Christmas Celebration was held in Johannesburg in November 2003. It was attended by most of the Gumboots SA team, representatives from the projects as well some of Gumboot's many friends.

Keeping in line with the precedent of previous Gumboots parties, it was a wonderful, multicultural evening, with the ladies from Leratong crèche twirling around the dance floor in their bright African prints, and teaching many of us a move or two! The evening gave everyone a chance to meet those involved in Gumboots they hadn't met, celebrate Gumboot's progress in the past year and look to the exciting developments that lie in the year to come.

By the end if the evening, as guests slowly left in the balmy summer air, the Christmas tree was engulfed by a mound of gifts that everyone had gathered and wrapped for their chosen Gumboot's projects.
